Community Schools Policy Symposium

New York, NY – Children’s Aid co-sponsored, along with Teachers College, a Community Schools Policy Symposium on Thursday, December 14.  The event launched the publication of a new report, Community Schools as an Effective School Improvement Strategy: A Review of the Evidence, prepared by the Learning Policy Institute and the National Education Policy Center as a companion piece to their July 2017 report on community schools as an evidence-based strategy for equitable school improvement.  The new report examined 143 studies of community schools, including at least one (the Social Return on Investment study) commissioned by Children’s Aid.  Jeannie Oakes, Senior Fellow at the Learning Policy Institute and one of the nation’s most notable education researchers, gave the keynote talk, followed by a response panel, moderated by Teachers College President Susan Fuhrman, that included three panelists: New York State Board of Regents Chancellor Betty A. Rosa; New York City Department of Education Office of Community Schools Director Chris Caruso; and Teachers College Professor Carolyn Riehl.
