In the News: Community Schools Promoting Equity, Improving Outcomes

In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Kerner Commission’s landmark report on prevention of community violence, today’s New York Times carried an Op Ed on the unmet promise of equality, authored by two leaders associated with the Commission—Fred Harris, the Commission’s lone surviving member, and Alan Curtis, President and Chief Executive of the Eisenhower Foundation (the private sector organization charged with operationalizing the Commission’s findings).  NCCS worked closely with the Eisenhower Foundation in the early 2000’s, providing implementation assistance on a multi-city community schools initiative created and overseen by the Foundation.  Today’s Op Ed names community schools specifically as an educational intervention that works in promoting equity and in improving outcomes.
