Hempstead Union Free School District Embarking on Community Schools

Hempstead, NY – Children’s Aid National Center for Community Schools (NCCS) has been working with the Hempstead Union Free School District  and their partners, to develop a plan that supports the implementation of the community schools strategy in Hempstead. James Clark, associate superintendent for secondary curriculum and instruction, has been put in charge of researching the strategy and convening an inclusive steering committee.

On February 2, 2017, Lissette Gomez, NCCS director of special projects, presented to a team of teachers and parents on the basics of Community Schools.  The participants were eager to learn about  the strategy and were engaged in rich conversations around fundamentals practices such as: selecting a lead agency partner, increasing family engagement, the role of a community school director, benefits of the strategy, and financing/sustaining the work.  Clark and others, visited the NCCS on December, 2017. NCCS is looking forward to supporting the implementation of community schools in the Hempstead Union Free School District.
